Aims and Objectives:
My magazine has multiple different purposes that it can serve. Firstly, the main aim of my magazine is to entertain the reader. To entertain the reader, my magazine will include Interviews, Concert information and interesting spreads. It will offer information on Hip-hop artists and new and upcoming hip-hop artists who are based/performing in North London. This could potentially interest the reader as they are finding out about hip-hop gigs in the area, and also new artists that they haven’t listened to that they could enjoy. My magazine would also advertise various Hip-Hop gigs in the North London area and also various other music products (perhaps CD’s and merchandise). These advertisements will help fund the initial production and copying of the magazine. Through these various advertisements and information, it would get the reader exited for a new copy each month to see what’s new.
Genre:
My magazine will be based around the music genre Hip-hop, so it would include information about artists and concerts within that genre. So this would be appealing to Music lovers but more specifically those who enjoy Hip-Hop.
Content:
My magazine is a music (Hip-Hop) magazine so the contents of it will revolve around Music, Artists and concerts in the given genre.
The magazine will include interviews from well known artists, Concert information, Spreads, posters, and advertisements for merchandise from other artists in the given music genre. This would excite the reader as they can find out more about the artists they love, and even discover new artists they’ve never heard of before.
My magazine will also give an opportunity to lesser known/Newer artists in the hopes of giving them their ‘Big Break’. I shall do this by interviewing them and putting the name of their most popular music/albums, along with a link on where to listen to it (Spotify for example) and where to buy a hard copy (or maybe include one with the magazine) and including pictures of them, and where to find them (socials/websites/music apps).
We could also include a forum (or a link to an online one) where readers can send in questions for us to ask the artist that will be featured in the next months issue. These questions could even include asking for advice from the artists in how to succeed in the industry which could also help a wider audience and could perhaps draw other people in to read.
Target Audience:
Primary Target audience = My primary target audience for this Magazine would be people who enjoy music in the Hip-Hop genre. Most likely specifically to younger people such as teenagers (15-19) of any gender, ethnicity or race. This is because the Hip-Hop genre is mostly appealing to younger audiences rather than older ones.
Secondary Target Audience = The magazines secondary audience would be people who enjoy music in general as this is a music based magazine. This could be anyone of any age, gender, race or ethnicity, but along as they enjoy music, this magazine may appeal to them.
Tertiary Target audience = This would include anyone else that would want to buy it regardless of what sort of interests they have. Whether it be for pleasure or buying it as a gift for somebody else.
Resources:
In order to create this magazine I would require:
Paper, pen and pencil for initial planning of layout and design of the magazine. This would be for the first initial stages of design; before it would transferred to a digital copy for finalising ideas.
For the Media going on/into the magazine, I would require a camera, tripod and camera lenses. These would be used to take pictures of the artist and whatever else we would need photos for based on the articles (For example, pictures of concerts, venues and merchandise). This would make sure that all the photography was original which would avoid any copy right and plagiarism issues.
For editing and piecing together, I would require an editing software (photoshop would probably be the best option). This would be used to edit any photos I would have taken (e.g. colour correction, filters and all round look of the photo), this would allow me to set the aesthetic for the whole magazine by making sure all my photos have their own original ‘look’. The software would also allow me to create double page spreads (for example for posters) and also move photos around to create my magazine cover, along with the individual pages within the magazine. This would mean nothing is being done by hand so it quicker and more efficient when printing on a mass level.
This next resource fits in with the last one, but I would need a laptop/computer in order to use and download the editing software. The computer will also be used for research and promotion (with social media) along with contacting people such as the artists and companies that I may need to borrow stuff from (A photoshoot studio, props, advertising e.t.c)
Personnel:
The main personnel needed for the magazine is the artist themselves who we need for pictures and interviews. The artist will probably have their own entourage (makeup artists, managers, assistants e.t.c) so they would be included in personnel too.
We would also need a photographer along with their assistants (and maybe even a makeup artists) for all the photoshoots and concert photography.
We would probably need a few people on editing as it would take quite a while for a singular person to edit a whole magazine themselves.
Supervisor to make sure photoshoot spots are safe to be used and to scout out locations and artists
Designers to help design spreads and covers of the magazine
Copyrighters to take care of copy right issues and plagiarism
Publishers to publish the magazine and send the monthly issues
And perhaps even a researcher to go out and do research about the new artists and concerts in the North London area.
Design Ideas
Colour pallet ideas:
I really like bold colours but with a bit of a dusty undertone because it gives a bit of a retro look. (I like the retro look for it because Hip-Hop was born around the 1970s and thats round about the time modern retro is based off).
Font ideas:
Im going along with the colour theme of “retro” and I would try to incorporate it into the font too. I might also use a mix of the retro fonts, and fonts that fit with the more modern Hip-Hop theme.
Font 1) Whilst this font looks quite simple, I think it would be great as the font on the cover that tells the reader what’s inside the magazine
Font 2) This font could be great on the front cover for the featured artists name because whilst it would stand out, it’s still got a sort of simple look to fit with the font above.
Font 3) I would use this font as the Title font. The font looks quite different to the previous ones but its essential it looks different so people can differentiate this font as the title.
Font 4) This font could also work well as a Title font for perhaps the spread pages inside rather than the font cover as if we have too many ‘design’ fonts, it could start to look messy.
